For Marketwake, giving back is just a part of who we are. We want philanthropic endeavors to be a part of all business — period. To get there, we have to start at home. That’s what this beer pong charity event we promised in the title is about.

But first, a little back story.

When I first started Marketwake, it was like many other new businesses. It was really hard work, and I learned two lessons quickly. The first is that the community you surround yourself with is as vital to your success as your personal grit to get things done. You can get up and plant the very best seeds, but if the soil you’re planting in isn’t fertile, nothing will ever grow.

The second lesson is the importance of not taking yourself too seriously and embracing fun. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison and competition, or mistakenly believing that fun will be a “distraction” from success.

But we found the opposite. We found that play gives life to creativity. We are far better marketers and creators because we embrace the big laughs and cultivate time for just being ourselves. And we discovered this from Friday Club.

Marketwake + Acuity getting ready for Blood, Sweat & Beers 2019 charity event

Friday Club began as a treat and end-of-week release for those in the office.

We would gather at the table around 3:30 and crack open a few beers. Our computers were always open, but we were also laughing, sharing stories, learning about each other, and connecting in ways I didn’t think possible in a work environment.

Then one day we realized that if we moved our large conference table outside, it would transform into a perfect beer pong table. We took it seriously and played with water, but we always had plenty of food and drinks available for anyone that wanted to join. Soon, word of Friday Club spread. Clients wanted to join, team members brought new recruits, and beer pong became an equalizing and nostalgic gathering point. We watched the competition, cheered for our friends, and just enjoyed playing. After a while, Friday Club built connection — and that connection spread.

And that’s how we got here: Blood, Sweat, & Beers 2019. It’s a beer pong charity event benefiting New Story, a charity dedicated to ending global poverty one 3D-printed house at a time and run by Atlanta-native Brett Hagler

I’ve known Brett for years and have had the pleasure of watching him build something far more significant than I could have imagined. Marketwake has been a fan of New Story from the beginning, and we’re very proud to be working alongside this incredible charity on many levels.

New Story combines everything we are passionate about: innovation, community, dignity, and doing well by doing good.  We wanted to support them and realized that what better than to bring our Friday Club to the community.

So, on Sunday, September 29 from 1-5 p.m., at New Realm Brewery, the Marketwake crew will challenge Atlanta’s best beer pong enthusiasts to a couple of games in the name of New Story’s mission. We’ll have the works: silent auction items, cornhole, food, and, yes, lots of beer. We’ll be playing with water in the cups — no one has to get sloppy rising to the top! — but we’ll also be supplying lots of opportunities to drink New Realm’s finest. And we’re doing it all in the name of building stronger communities.

I know shelter and security is a basic human need, and everyone deserves to have a space that they can call home. Our jobs are important, the work we do is important, but at the end of the day, we never lose sight of what really matters: People. In everything we do, we want to make sure that people are at the very heart of the Marketwake journey.

So put together a team of great throwing arms, consider being a sponsor, or donate something for us to add to the auction because we can’t wait to meet you at the pong table.
